My favorite part of being a student at Carroll is being a part of a very respectful, inclusive, and welcoming community.

What Should school “do” for you?

School should give me a positive and healthy environment to learn in while providing me with multiple resources that can help me accomplish my academic goals.

What’s a lesson you learned when you overcame a difficult obstacle?

A lesson I learned when overcoming difficult obstacles is that everything will not always come easy. You may have to work harder to find solutions, but no matter what happens, you should never give up on what you are trying to accomplish.

What’s your biggest dream in life?

My biggest dream is to become an inspiration and role model for people who may not have someone to look up to.

How do you like spending your free time?

I spend most of my free time shopping and going on road trips with my friends.

Grace Brown '25, St. Anthony School Alumna and Gonzaga House Member, with Mrs. Melissa Leaman

At St. Pat's Fest, Grace really went above and beyond.  She stepped into a role that normally was for an adult on Saturday and was here for almost all day cleaning up on Sunday.  She was willing to jump in and do whatever was asked of her without complaint, and I am very thankful for her.

To keep my head and do not let people tear me down.

To become a lawyer and buy my mom a good house to live in.

How do you like spending your free time?

I like to play with my uncle's dog and help my grandma cook and bake. I also love to sleep.

Corrinn has taken a leadership role with the Revolution Lenten Challenge for the Almsgiving challenge.  She is also one of the leaders for one of the Key Club events at the end of March.  She has been organizing the event, taking notes, and truly being a leader and easy to work with!

School should push me to be the best I can while helping me learn life skills.

Don’t stress over things you can’t control.

What’s your biggest dream in life?

My biggest dream is to travel the world by country and give back to the communities I visit through service projects and volunteering.

How do you like spending your free time?

I spend my free time usually hanging out with my friends or shopping. 

Sky Londergan ‘25, Gonzaga House and St. Luke School alum, with Ms. Gretchen Obergefell ’19

Sky shows exemplary character both in the classroom and behind the stage. Sky gets right to work sweeping the bleachers, moving chairs, cleaning up trash, putting supplies away, and looks around and finds what needs to be completed and does it without having to ask an adult leader what needs to be done. Most people would note that all of this help is way above and beyond the job description of “stage manager,” extending responsibilities outside the stage itself by cleaning up the gym and cafeteria after performances.

My favorite part about being a student at Carroll are the after school opportunities, Drama Club, and the willingness of the teachers to share stories and life advice with students.

What Should school “do” for you?

School should teach students how to problem solve and create strong educational foundations that students can use to make intelligent choices in their day to day lives. Along with that, school should offer well-rounded opportunities that encourage students to do something that fits their needs and interests.

What’s a lesson you learned when you overcame a difficult obstacle?

A lesson I’ve learned after overcoming a difficult obstacle is that as long as you take away something and learn how you can improve it next time, every obstacle is a great opportunity. After every difficult obstacle, you have to go back and pick out something you can improve on, and then execute that into the next thing you do.

What’s your biggest dream in life?

My biggest dream in life is to be dedicated and enjoy what I pursue after high school.

How do you like spending your free time?

I like spending my free time at stage crew, hanging out with friends, and listening to music.

Student of the Week Addison Linard '25, Baltimore House and St. Helen School Alumna, with Mrs. Acacia Morrell

Addison swam last year, but while participating in Color Guard, she was worried about taking on too much.  She helps me as a team manager, and has been a godsend as I do not have an assistant coach.  Addison recently told me she is now the Assistant Stage Manager for the musical this spring, too. Addison has done all this with grace even while she has faced some adversity in her life.

What's your favorite part of being a student at Carroll?

The welcoming community and all the friends that I’ve made through my years here. I also love the inclusivity and leadership roles available to the students.

What should school “do” for you?

I think that school should teach us how to form life-long skills and friendships. We learn all the basic courses like math and science, but we also learn how to cook and manage our finances. I’ve learned how to form friendships that will last, and the friends that I’ve made have made the biggest impact on my life.

What’s a lesson you learned when you overcame a difficult obstacle?

Don’t keep doing something that you don’t absolutely love. I was on a swim team from a young age until last year, and leaving it was so amazing for my mental health. I am so excited to continue as part of the swim team as a leader while also being able to have a leadership role in the musical and be in the color guard.

What’s your biggest dream in life?

I want to have a future where I’m a famous fashion designer whose designs are shown and admired all around the world.

How do you like spending your free time?

I spend my free time making origami swans and paper flowers. I also love making sketches of all of my fashion designs.

I am in Multicultural Club.  We often go to movies, sports games, or even host small parties, so groups that don't get much recognition at Carroll can feel in place.

What's your favorite part of being a student at Carroll?

The people.  I've met some fantastic people here at Carroll.  I have made amazing friends, met fantastic teachers, and they have all helped me grow as a person. Without them, I'd still be very immature.

What should school “do” for you?

School should continue to challenge me to be a better person; a person who should fight indifference and expand the cultural tastes of everyone.

What’s a lesson you learned when you overcame a difficult obstacle?

Mistakes are common. When I was younger, I made a lot of stupid decisions by only thinking about myself. Through overcoming these, I learned that I wasn't perfect, and I will continue making mistakes as I grow as a person that I will need to learn from.

What’s your biggest dream in life?

To help others who are wronged against throughout the world. We are all people; we live under the same star.

How do you like spending your free time?

I love to study other cultures and languages, although I do also love unwinding for the day and playing some video games with friends, because we all need a chance to just take a break.

School should provide a foundation for who you are and will become. It should prepare you for the journey of life ahead. It should have adults that you can trust and talk to if ever in need or just want to talk.

What’s a lesson you learned when you overcame a difficult obstacle?

I’ve learned not to let your past define you. It’s in the past for a reason.

I don’t have much free time, but when I do, I like to be with my friends and get chocolate milk.

Although Andrew is in a number of leadership positions, he always goes above and beyond his leadership responsibilities.  In the classroom, Andrew serves as a model student who is always willing to assist his peers with decoding programs. I feel like school should be a safe and relaxing place for all people.  Even though it can cause a lot of stress, it could lead to something nice. Also, I feel like it should have the best interest in us as a community and have a well-rounded mindset for kids that need help with personal or educational growth.

Never give up on your hopes and dreams because if God challenges you with something, it only means he has something better for you at the end.

To be successful and make my parents proud of all my accomplishments.

Caleb was out due to surgery for quite a while and got all of his work done within a few days of returning.  He had a positive attitude throughout the process of missing school, making up the work and transitioning to our current work.  He handled what could have been a really challenging situation responsibly like a true Carroll Patriot.

A lesson I learned was to do stuff in small increments. I learned this due to me being out for 2-3 weeks because of a surgery I had.

To not have to worry about budgeting my money.  I want to be very financially stable and independent at a young age.

I think school should make you excited for the rest of your life, knowing that we are getting a quality education at Carroll will help us in the long run.  Doing anything in school should feel like an accomplishment.

A lesson I learned when I overcame a difficult obstacle in my life is that even though it may feel like you can’t open up about your struggles, you will ultimately always have someone in your corner even if you don't realize that they are there.

My biggest dream in life is to grow up and be successful in my career and end up living on a lake with a beautiful lake house and family.

Matthew has been so helpful in Family Room this year. He has taken initiative to help our incoming freshmen and our three transfer students log in to view their grades and has offered to help them on academic days with their work. He's been very inclusive and welcoming in our family even as a sophomore. We're so happy to have him in our family, and his efforts to welcome others into our family are greatly appreciated.

Mia Harrison ‘23, Nathan Snizik ’23, and Karissa Speakman '23 participated in the TEDxYouth Dayton “Illuminate” event.  These three Archbishop Carroll High School students were part of a group of ten area young people who gave speeches in the Rose Auditorium of the Dayton Art Institute on March 16, 2023.

Gabriella Kimbrough '24, Trinity House, with Mrs. Tara Ashworth

Gabriella transferred into Carroll during school year and is a rockstar at Spanish.  She offers to help all of the time, takes time to come in early, and stays late just to help others. Her middle name might be "service" and we just don't know it.

What's your favorite part of being a student at Carroll?

My favorite part about Carroll is the community. I transferred in the middle of the school year and was worried about making friends and meeting people, but that has been the easiest part of the transition. Everyone is incredibly welcoming and helpful in making it a smooth transition. One of the first weeks I was at Carroll, there was a basketball game where Moses came and "parted the water" so everyone wore different colors and we acted it out at half-time. I remember thinking it was so neat that we all coordinated that. Also at that game, I had shown up alone and was nervous I would just be standing alone in the bleachers, but I ended up leaving after to get food with a group of people.

What should school “do” for you?

Something a school should do that Carroll does an amazing job at is providing students the opportunity to connect with one another and find their passions with their peers.

What’s a lesson you learned when you overcame a difficult obstacle?

A cliché lesson I have learned from obstacles is that there is always light at the end of the tunnel. Things might be really difficult, but there can be joy in every day if you look for it or make it.

What’s your biggest dream in life?

I have a bunch of goals, but I want to be able to spend time with my family, hopefully traveling together. I want to go to college and major in biomedical science for pre-med. I am currently interested in orthopedic surgery and emergency medicine.

How do you enjoy spending your free time?

I play lacrosse and run cross country and track. I love spending time with friends and family. My little sister and I are really close, and one morning of the week we go to Starbucks before school to hangout.  Most of the time we spend there is just us laughing about the most random things.

I was failing a class, so I learned I have to do my homework in order to be successful in school.

What’s your biggest dream in life?

I want to become a very successful comic book artist live a comfortable and fulfilling life while doing so.

I enjoy making art, and playing card games and video games.

Turn to music!! When I'm going through a hard time, I find that Taylor Swift always has a song that can relate to it. Listening to her songs can always help me get through it. You could do that with any artist you like, too!

Hayden is disciplined, leads by example, and is well-rounded.   He has demonstrated leadership by obtaining the Star Rank in Boy Scouts, helping to lead our Music Ministry at school and as a Family Room leader, his achievements in Track and Cross Country, and his achievement in the classroom.   Each time I taught Hayden, he has taken his coursework seriously, participated in class, and was a model student for his peers to observe and follow.  He’s not afraid to speak up or take initiative.   When Hayden says he’s going to do something, you can count on him to do it.

It should allow you to immerse yourself in whatever your things are; arts, sports, academics, and more. You should be able to tailor your own experience.

What’s a lesson you learned when you overcame a difficult obstacle?

Sometimes, you need to focus only on the task at hand to overcome an obstacle. You have to push all the doubts and other possibilities out of your mind and just do what you can at that moment. 

What’s your biggest dream in life?

A job in the music industry. I would like to be a recording engineer, as I love music and science. I would be living "the dream" if my job somehow involves music.

Mia Harrison ‘23 has her sights set on working in the US State Department using diplomacy to change the world. This year, she revived a club at Archbishop Carroll High School to help her make that dream come true.

Starting a new chapter of the Model United Nations at Carroll was a project she began as a freshman but had to put on hold as the Covid-19 pandemic changed everything about how schools and group events like the Model UN summit operated in Ohio and around the world. Now as a senior, Mia was able to bring that group to life at Carroll with the help of Social Studies teacher Mrs. Courtney (Griffith) Thompson ‘16.

“As long as you have the support and structure in place or a teacher who is enthusiastic about putting it in place, it’s easier than you might think to start
a club like this at Carroll,” Harrison said. “Mrs. Thompson was energetic about getting us involved.”

Harrison and Thompson met about once a month over the summer to lay the groundwork for the rest of the club members and work through logistical
hurdles to register for the conference scheduled for December 2022. Once the school year began, they met two or three times a month with the other 14 club members to prepare resolutions for the countries they chose to represent at the conference: Nicaragua, Fiji, and Nigeria.

The three geographically and politically diverse nations offered the students an opportunity to focus on a specific problem facing those countries and work within the UN’s 17 goals to solve it. The group representing Fiji proposed building more hydroelectric dams to help grow tourism while preserving the country’s natural resources and beauty. The delegation for Nigeria chose to build resource centers for the country’s citizens. For Nicaragua, the delegation led by Mia, the students proposed that the UN oversee the country’s elections to ensure a fair outcome and protect citizens who express dissent over the current regime’s policies.

All three groups presented their country’s resolution. Out of 150 resolutions prepared by students across Ohio, the Nicaraguan delegation was one of 35 to pass the preliminary security council for presentation to the General Assembly for debate to become official UN policy.

“I was ecstatic to be able to present in that room,” Harrison said. “Your bill is read, and other members of the conference either attempt to destroy or support it. I had been waiting to do this my entire high school career, and it finally happened. I felt blessed and grateful that we put this together.”

Although the bill did not become policy, Mia and the rest of the students were grateful for a true cross-curricular experience. After learning about injustices in Central America during Spanish and religion classes, researching their nations and writing resolutions showed the students where the UN Goals and Catholic Social Teaching overlap.

“When you look at the seven components of Catholic Social Teaching, you see that they align very closely with the UN Goals,” Harrison said. “What the goals of the UN and Catholic Church are trying to do are similar to what a lot of people want the world to be like, and Carroll lets it be known that we are working towards those goals.”

Mia Harrison was recognized as an Outstanding Leader at the conference and Maria Camacho '23 was recognized as the runner-up in an essay contest for her response to a prompt about world peace.

Ahn Le is in her first year here from Vietnam and has tackled the challenge coming to a new school.  Anh has made an amazing effort to make new friends and be engaged, and she works very hard in her classes while also learning what life is like being an "American teen".  Anh has also shared traditions from Vietnam such as how her family celebrated their Vietnamese New Year.

What activities do you participate in?

I am involved in the International Club and the Spanish Club. I really enjoyed the time doing activities with friends in the clubs. Besides, the field trips of the International Club give me chances to make new friends and enjoy the time with them. The activity I like the most is skating with the International Club.

What's your favorite part of being a student at Carroll?

As a student at Carroll, I feel very happy to participate in many activities which are organized by the school. My favorite activities are House Events because they help me to connect with other friends in my House. House Events help me develop skills to work with other friends and bring us closer to each other.

What should school “do” for you?

School is great now because because it is meeting all my needs. The other students are friendly and nice to me. My teachers help me a lot with any assignments, and they always answer my questions about anything.

What’s a lesson you learned when you overcame a difficult obstacle?

A lesson I learned when I overcame a difficult obstacle was that I can rest when I feel too tired to do something, but I must not stop completely.

What’s your biggest dream in life?

My biggest dream in life is to work a job I like, have a happy life, and have more time to take care of my parents.

Chalsie is a Trinity Captain and has led the Family Room very well – she plans well and executes those plans to her fullest.  Chalsie also has a Cricut and has made many things this year for Trinity House.  She would not accept money and did it for service hours.  She made posters for the Trinity Cheer in the fall as well as t-shirts and coasters for Christmas presents for the Trinity faculty and staff.

What's your favorite part of being a student at Carroll?

My favorite part of being a Carroll student is being able to be a Captain for Trinity House, show other students the Carroll spirit, and inspire them to be there best during their Carroll experience.  The whole community here at Archbishop Carroll High School is a blessing to me.

What should school “do” for you?

What I think school should do for me is make sure everyone here feels welcomed at all times and prepare me for my future in life and education.

What’s a lesson you learned when you overcame a difficult obstacle?

The end of my junior year here at Carroll was a very difficult obstacle for me because I was stressed out a lot with worry about my next step of my high school career.  It’s a big step in our life, but the teachers and counselors here at Carroll helped calmed me down and showed me what each step was like for college.  I was very worried to apply to my dream college, but they told me not to worry because Carroll prepares you very well and can help you get into all of your dream colleges if you strive for it. So, the start of my senior year here at Carroll was not overwhelming because I was accepted into my dream college thanks to the faculty here at Carroll.

What’s your biggest dream in life?

My biggest dream in life is to attend Sinclair Community College and get a bachelor’s degree in interior design, then move on to finding a job as an interior designer.

I have always had an interest in the way our world works. Since I was a little kid, I would read and watch videos about all kinds of random, but strangely fascinating things, such as where the trash goes, what happens to my money after I buy something, or how race cars can go so fast. I was always curious to learn about things and find out how they affected me, or even how I can affect them. So, as I got older and gained a greater understanding and appreciation of the world, it was natural I became interested in politics and how our government works.

What really had me counting down the days until the 2022 Midterms was how dependent our government is on the participation of the people: me.  I would be able to impact real issues that directly make a difference in many people’s lives. I soon realized that in order to make a positive impact, I would need to make informed decisions in who I choose to vote for.  I would need to understand all the facts surrounding an issue and have the ability to argue for myself with credible evidence. When I came to this realization I still felt I had a lot to learn. This is where Archbishop Carroll High School comes in.

I took two classes that I believe did more than enough to make me an informed voter. The first, AP U.S History, I took my sophomore year. While much of the time it was a rigorous, tiring class that made me consider visiting the guidance counselor’s office, I know with hindsight that in reality, it is one of the best things I could have done. It provided so much context and knowledge about many of the issues we face today. It’s impossible to understand current events without understanding the events of the past, and APUSH absolutely helped me to do that. The passion of my teacher, Mr. [Erik] Ramsey ‘93 also fueled my enthusiasm to learn more.

The following year, my junior year, I took AP Government with Mr. [Chris] Sorrell ‘83. I could go on and on about the great things this class and this teacher did for me as a student, voter, and a person, but in short it helped me to apply what I had learned the year before. I learned the processes of our government, and exactly the means through which I was able to express my newly formed perspectives. I also understood the ways other people have been expressing their own perspectives and how I can join them. By the time I had completed the AP test, I felt I was ready to go to the polls and make an informed, positive impact.

After I voted for the first time, I was thrilled to finally be able to participate in something I have become so invested in. I felt that while it was one measly vote, it was an informed, educated, and passionate one. I was now a part of how our government works. The next day I went to tell Mr. Sorrell that I had voted, and he said something along the lines of, “And you’ll keep coming back.”

He’s right.

Cameron leads by example.  He has stepped up in leadership on a number of occasions, especially during PATS Retreats which he has led twice this school year.  Cameron is kind and cares about people.  He has a quick smile and a big heart.  He is a great example of what a Carroll Patriot should be, and we are blessed to have him here.

My favorite part about being student at Carroll is the community. The teachers here are caring and understanding, and you can tell they really care about you.

I think school should be a place where you grow spiritually and mentally. It should be a place that nurtures and helps you grow.

What’s a lesson you learned when you overcame a difficult obstacle?

The biggest lesson I have learned is to ask for help.  When I first came to Carroll, the workload was a big adjustment, and I struggled but found that there’s a community of people that want you to succeed. As a young man, it is hard to ask for help sometimes but there are always people there to help guide you.

What’s your biggest dream in life?

My biggest dream in my life is to work in a career field I truly love and start a family someday.

How do you like spending your free time?

I enjoying hanging out with my friends, listening to music, and taking a nap when I can.

Sophia Sassenberg brings the best of these qualities into every classroom she enters. Sophia is kind and respectful and has shown a fun and inquisitive approach to education during her freshman year. Sophia came to Carroll as a stand-out performer in the band, and through her curiosity and enthusiasm, she has elevated herself as a true stand-out Patriot.

What's your favorite part of being a student at Carroll?

My favorite part of being a student at Carroll is the experience. I am able to meet new people all the time, I have made great friends, and enjoy all of my classes. I have learned so much already, and I am so glad I have the opportunity to attend Carroll for my high school experience.

What should school “do” for you?

I believe that school should prepare me for my future and further education. So far, I believe that Carroll is doing exactly that.

What’s a lesson you learned when you overcame a difficult obstacle?

An obstacle I overcame was my fear of social interactions. Before sixth grade, I was one of the quietest, most reserved kids you would ever meet. I was scared of making mistakes or being made fun of, so I just stayed quiet. Then in sixth grade, I became friends with the people that made me who I am now. Making new friends brought me out of my shell, and I am so thankful for all of the people who have come to know and love me, especially the people who knew me before I became who I am. This experience taught me that you shouldn't worry about what other people think of you, you just need to find the right group of people who love and support you no matter what.

What’s your biggest dream in life?

To lead a successful life.

How do you like spending your free time?

In my free time, I play the clarinet, hang out with my sister, listen to music, watch Netflix, pet my cat, Angler, and learn new instruments.

Meredith did a really great job initiating the therapy dog session for final exams in December and helping plan a baby shower for Mrs Merkle.  She follows through with everything she promises and has been great to work with.

What's your favorite part of being a student at Carroll?

My favorite part of being a student at Carroll is having teachers who support me outside of the classroom by attending sporting and fine arts events.

What should school “do” for you?

School should be a safe place where you can explore who and what you want to be without judgment.

What’s a lesson you learned when you overcame a difficult obstacle?

I learned the importance of not letting others define who you are, and above all, I learned that you need to do what makes you happy.

What’s your biggest dream in life?

My biggest dream is to conquer the lesson above: to be at peace with myself and not value others' opinions so much that I lose focus on my own. I also dream of being a judge on a cooking show, like Chopped, even though I lack culinary expertise.

How do you like spending your free time?

When I have free time, I like playing video games with my family, volunteering at 4 Paws for Ability, and playing the violin.

Charli brought to me a $20 bill that she found on the floor in Family Room.  We traced it back to the person who was sitting in the seat the previous period and returned the money to its rightful owner.  She could have put that $20 bill in her pocket, and I suspect no one else would have ever known.  Her honesty and integrity are a good example for students at Carroll.

I am Vice President of National Art Honor Society, I participate in Media 4 Carroll, and I am a student ambassador.

What's your favorite part of being a student at Carroll?

My favorite part of being a student at Carroll is the people. I love getting to know all the people in my classes and I enjoy being around the teachers and staff here as well.

What should school “do” for you?

School should help students grow academically and socially. It should also give students a chance to try out different things and figure out what they want to do as a career. 

What’s a lesson you learned when you overcame a difficult obstacle?

I learned to always value my family and close friends first, because they know me so well and they have my best interest at heart. 

What’s your biggest dream in life?

My biggest dream in life is to be happy and to have enough resources to be able to travel around the world – a fleet of all my dream cars would be nice as well. 

How do you like spending your free time?

I spend my free time working at Dairy Queen in Huber Heights, hanging out with my friends, going on Target runs, and listening to music.

Sam Brun is a hard working student in class and contributes regularly to class discussions.  I have him in a class with Sophomores and Juniors, and he is the only Freshman.  This does not intimidate him in any way.  He is also able to handle situations that could make lead to tension with other students with grace and patience.

My favorite part of being a student at Carroll is the sense of community and belonging that Carroll is so great at providing for each and every student.

For me, school should allow everyone to become the best versions of themselves, and allow them to learn how to overcome obstacles in life.

What’s a lesson you learned when you overcame a difficult obstacle?

A lesson that I’ve learned is that nothing in life is served to you on a silver platter. If you want to be successful in life, taking the first step to becoming great will open your eyes to so many possibilities.

What’s your biggest dream in life?

My biggest dream in life is to become successful in whatever field I choose to pursue but with that comes acknowledging why you became successful. You need to realize that God gave you the strengths and skills to become successful. That is my true dream in life, which is to praise God by using my strengths and skills to become the best version of myself.

How do you like spending your free time?

I like to spend my free time spending time with friends and family, playing volleyball, and the occasional 3 a.m. Minecraft sessions with my older brothers.

Laura is deserving of recognition for many reasons.  She's an enthusiastic participant in Family Room and she always interacts with Family members in a positive way. Laura has a talent unique to Carroll - she is a competitive ice skater.  She maintains a high GPA while balancing long hours of practices and competitions.

What activities do you participate in?

I compete in ice skating as a member of the United States Figure Skating Association outside of school. I compete both in individual freestyle and on a qualifying Intermediate level synchronized skating team with the Miami Skating Academy out of Oxford, OH.   I am a Senior level Girl Scout, and I also volunteer as a certified Learn to Skate Instructor at South Metro Ice Arena and as an usher for Dayton Live; if you attend an event at the Schuster Center, you may see me as a smiling face ready to help you find your seat!

What's your favorite part of being a student at Carroll?

My favorite part of being a student at Carroll is that it has a great community. Whenever you need something there is usually at least one person who is willing to help, and they are also very understanding.

What should school “do” for you?

I believe school should help us to further our education and grow our curiosity and love for subjects we enjoy.

What’s a lesson you learned when you overcame a difficult obstacle?

I learned that decisions can be life-changing and that speaking up is never a question, but an answer.

What’s your biggest dream in life?

I would like to be part of Team USA for the figure skating Olympics and be the first person to land a Quin jump (five rotations in the air).

How do you like spending your free time?

I enjoy watching movies with my family, drawing, and figure skating.

Jayd’s grades have improved dramatically through the semester.  She is also focused on her work, asks questions when she needs help, and checks with me when she misses class.  I am so impressed with her work ethic and positive attitude.  She is also very respectful and a pleasure to have in class!

Outside of school I like to play basketball mostly, some soccer and do anything with my family, from a party, game, or vacation.

Having access to all the education and books I need to grow my knowledge and better it. That is my favorite part of being a Carroll student.

What should school “do” for you?

School should do no more than what it already does, as school already helps me to better my knowledge and helps me have a better set up for life and my future.

What’s a lesson you learned when you overcame a difficult obstacle?

I learned to not stress and try to find a solution, and if you ask God for help, he'll give it to you.

What’s your biggest dream in life?

Being able to give my loved ones any and everything they want so they'll have little to no worries.

How do you like spending your free time?

I like to spend time with my younger brother and play with him, doing whatever he wants, mostly.

Gunnar is an all around great kid.  His school spirit stands out as he went especially all in for Homecoming Spirit Week bringing a smile to everyone’s face.  He is very kind to everyone as well.

What activities do you participate in?

I'm a member of Chess Club and considering trying out for the Bowling Team.

What's your favorite part of being a student at Carroll?

My favorite part of being a student at Carroll is probably the sense of community, because despite me not being the most outgoing person, it took me almost no time to open up to others and make friends.

What should school “do” for you?

School should give me a place to not only prepare for the future that lies ahead of me and help me build friendships with people that will be there for me years after I've graduated.

What’s a lesson you learned when you overcame a difficult obstacle?

I've come to learn from my obstacles that what comes after an obstacle is always worth pushing for, even if it's just a sense of accomplishment.

What’s your biggest dream in life?

My biggest dream in life is to give back to the BMX scene. With how much it has given me, I'd love to give back in any way possible, whether it be starting my own brand, opening a bike shop, or just helping the next generation of BMX riders by giving them extra parts or advice on a trick they can't seem to figure out.

How do you like spending your free time?

I spend the majority of my free time outside of school riding BMX, laying down some nasty riffage on my 5 string bass, trying to figure out what to make for breakfast as a vegan, or playing video games with friends.

Roberto has been very engaged and works hard inside and outside of the classroom. While he prefers to work alone, I have noticed that he is willing to get outside of his comfort zone and work with his classmates during group activities. He is always one of the first students to attempt to answer questions and will ask questions when he needs assistance. While these are all great qualities in a student, the thing that I think puts him over the edge is at the end of class, he will go around the classroom and put up any chair that doesn't get put up by other students before he leaves for the day.

Caleb is a freshman this year, but due to his prior involvement in the Marching Patriots, he already possesses tremendous leadership skills.  He's punctual beyond expectation and always stays around to help organize equipment.   Caleb leads with a smile and encourages new members to be their best.

What's your favorite part of being a student at Carroll?

My favorite part of being a Carroll student is all of the people there are so kind and helpful. I feel very comfortable with the Carroll family, and Carroll feels like a second home to me.

What should school “do” for you?

I believe that the purpose of school is to prepare me for college and all of the obstacles that I have ahead of me. Carroll is a great school and so far I am confident that Carroll is achieving just that.

What’s a lesson you learned when you overcame a difficult obstacle?

One thing that I have learned from being a Carroll student is how to deal with time management. I have to balance activities with schoolwork. Being a section leader in Marching Band, participating in Drama Club, finishing homework, and all of the other things that I do is tough to achieve. I have learned to work it out and still achieve my goals.

What’s your biggest dream in life?

My biggest dream in life is to get good grades, go to college to get a good job, and stay happy through it all.

How do you like spending your free time?

In my free time, I enjoy playing board games, watching movies, playing soccer, spending time outside, and playing music.

Lauren Morquecho is the Inter-House Captain for Mercy House.  She is particularly skilled at welcoming, encouraging, and including her fellow students in activities and events. Lauren is upbeat and positive, and she's a champion for a student who may feel unincluded or is having a tough day. On schedule pick-up day, Lauren worked with native Spanish-speaking families to help those families complete the tasks needed for the start of the school year, and on Meet the Teacher night, she led our Family Room session by describing the academic, spiritual, emotional, and community benefits of Family Room and our House System.

When you set your mind to something and you 100% know you can do it, do it don’t let someone else tell you that you can’t.

I like spending my free time playing with my little sisters or watching my nephews play their sports.

Hope is sweet, kind, and cares so deeply about everyone around her. She reaches out a helping hand before she is ever asked to do so. She is curious and inquisitive in her studies and works extremely hard to achieve success. What's your favorite part of being a student at Carroll?

My favorite part of Carroll is the teachers. They have made me feel completely welcome and at home in Carroll High School in addition to teaching me some of the most vital information of my life: how to deal with other students. 

What should school “do” for you?

I think that school should provide for you a foundation to join the world, and an atmosphere that encourages you to choose good and right rather than easy. 

What’s a lesson you learned when you overcame a difficult obstacle?

I have learned throughout this year that everything does not have to work and fit perfectly.  You simply need to be striving for the best outcome because that is all you can control.

What’s your biggest dream in life?

I don’t really know what I want to do with my life yet. In second grade, we had to make a book, and I said I wanted to be a mother of 11 kids. My teacher in all her wisdom said try one first. I’m still not really sure what I want to do, but I hope to learn what God wants for me in my time here at Carroll.

How do you like spending your free time?

I know that this is cheesy and overused but my favorite way to spend my time is with my family. I really can’t imagine a better day than doing anything with my family.

What activities do you participate in?

I am an Editor in Yearbook Club, President of National Honor Society, and an Officer for Spanish club. Additionally, I am involved in Ohio Math League, Spanish Honor Society, and I’m a research intern at Wright Patterson Air Force Base under mentor Dr. John Harrell.

What's your favorite part of being a student at Carroll?

The teachers are my favorite part about being at Carroll. Shoutout to Mrs. Edwards, Mrs. Ollier, Dr. O’Malley, Ms. Caserta, Mrs. Fuhr, Mr. Ochs, Mayor Williams, and so many others. 

What should school “do” for you?

School should give you a little of an idea of what you want to do in life. Whether that be traveling, entering into a trade school, taking a break, or entering into college, school should support and inspire you to take your next few steps.

What’s a lesson you learned when you overcame a difficult obstacle?

Although I was born in the US, I lived in China for the first four years of my life with my grandparents. When I came to the US, I barely knew any English going into preschool. Because of the language barrier, I was scared of talking. Therefore, through this, I have learned to ask the questions you have and to talk to the people you’ve always wanted to talk to; after all, there’s no guarantee that you’ll ever see anyone from your high school ever again.

What’s your biggest dream in life?

My biggest dream in life has always been to become an oncologist (a cancer doctor) and to get a dog. Part of my dream is coming true because my family is getting a toy poodle in a few weeks!

How do you like spending your free time?

In my free time, I like to read, cook, and bake. Currently, I’ve baked a dozen different chocolate chip cookie recipes in search of the perfect cookie.

I believe school should teach us to be responsible and good people before we go out into the world.

I learned that sometimes it is okay when things don’t go the way you planned, it is better to learn from it and adapt.

I would love working to make my community better and helping as many people as I can.

I learned the importance of resting when you need to, so you don’t break. If things aren’t working out the way that you wanted, it is best to take a step back and reevaluate the problem

What’s your biggest dream in life?

My biggest dream in life is to become better at viola and art, so I can eventually share what I enjoy with others.  Most importantly, I want to have a family with a lot of cats.

How do you like spending your free time?

I enjoy spending time with my cats, reading, listening to music, drawing, playing video games, and making smoothies.

I enjoy being able to say that I have gone to school here longer than most of the seniors because I took math here in 7th and 8th grade.

What’s a lesson you learned when you overcame a difficult obstacle?

I learned the importance of not letting others define who you are, and above all, I learned that you need to do what makes you happy.

What’s your biggest dream in life?

Although I have a lot of goals for myself, my biggest dream in life is to find all of my dog’s brothers and sisters and hold a huge family reunion for them in a large yard with lots of squeaky toys and peanut butter.

How do you like spending your free time?

When I have free time, I like playing video games with my family (specifically any Mario game) and volunteering at 4 Paws for Ability.

My favorite part of being a student at Carroll is the family environment that is present within the building each and every day. Carroll’s faculty and staff truly care about helping students become successful both in and out of the classroom.

School should provide a solid foundation for you to be successful outside of the classroom in the real world.

I have learned that everything happens for a reason and that you can always count on your friends and family to support you when you need it most.

My biggest dream in life is to be a successful politician who truly works for their constituents, rather than just themselves. If nothing else, I would love to have a family and be there for my children.

In my free time, I enjoy watching the news and sporting events, going on a run, or hanging out with my friends.

Hannah has taken on the leadership role in our family room as a Junior. She has organized events and really helped bring the Family Room together. Taking on a role like that when you are younger than your peers can be intimidating, but she has done it with such grace and poise. What's your favorite part of being a student at Carroll?

It has to be the opportunities that I’m given here. It’s never too late to get involved at Carroll. Whether you’re an incoming Freshman or a second semester Senior, there is always a welcoming environment waiting for you. I encourage everyone to get out of their comfort zone at least once during their time at Carroll.

What should school “do” for you?

School should set me up for success. It should provide an environment that feels safe and comfortable -- a perfect balance between working and socializing.

What’s a lesson you learned when you overcame a difficult obstacle?

For the first quarter of my Junior year, I attended online public school due to Covid. I went into it with an open mind, but it just didn’t compare. By the time I finally came back to Carroll, I had learned the importance of community and never to take it for granted.

What’s your biggest dream in life?

Ultimately, I’d like to end up doing something creative, something that I can really pour myself into and be proud of the results like writing songs or filming movies. 

How do you like spending your free time?

I love spending my free time playing instruments with my friends, going to the gym, and listening to music.

One difficult obstacle that I have faced was online learning. I overcame this by studying more and paying hard attention to what was being taught, as well as self-teaching.

One of my biggest dreams in life is to turn my fish keeping hobby into a business.

I like to spend my free time by tending to my fish keeping hobby and hanging out with friends.

Both students went well above and beyond what was needed in their clean-up efforts in Study Hall and actually ended up cleaning the cafeteria as well as the hallway between the cafeteria and the gym.

All this was done on their own.  I did not ask them to do it.  They saw a need and a call to action and acted upon it.

To me, these efforts are symbolic of what a Patriot is and should be.

What’s a lesson you learned when you overcame a difficult obstacle?

Being the youngest of seven, I have always been surrounded by my siblings. When they started leaving for college, one-by-one, it was hard for me to adjust to the new environment. Through this difficult transition, I learned the importance of enjoying the present moment and the time you have with people.

What’s your biggest dream in life?

My biggest dream is to attend medical school and have a career that allows me to work with children and those in need.

How do you like spending your free time?

I spend a majority of my time with my friends and family, finding new coffee shops to try, reading, and running.

Max is a kind and positive young man who exemplifies a level of responsibility beyond his years.  While there was a substitute teacher in the room, Max created a review game for the class to play to study for the upcoming test.  I was very impressed to see this first hand when I came back into the room and everyone was either working on their assignments or reviewing with Max's game.  A big “Thank You” goes to Max for leading the class in active studying!

I am team manager for soccer, and I am a player on the volleyball team.

My favorite part of being a student at carroll is going to the football games and cheering for the team with all of my friends.

What should school “do” for you?

I feel that school should give you a chance to improve and grow in not only your learning and studying skills, but also your social skills that everyone needs when working in groups with others for jobs and occupations.

What’s a lesson you learned when you overcame a difficult obstacle?

When I overcome a huge obstacle in life, I feel satisfied that I beat something that feels insurmountable, and I feel like I grow as a person and gain new skills to make the job easier next time I am faced with a large obstacle.

What’s your biggest dream in life?

My biggest dream in life is to get a college education and have a steady job while still staying in touch with my friends and family.

How do you like spending your free time?

I love to read, play games with my dogs, and spend time with my friends.

Grace is truly friendly.  I do not have her in class, but she speaks to me every day.  She has become my go-to for a shadow guide because she is just so nice.

I am currently in Spanish Club, and I am on the Girls Bowling team.

What's your favorite part of being a student at Carroll?

Honestly, my favorite part of being a student at Carroll is the community we have. I love the teachers and how they are here for you regardless if you take their class or not. I feel that the teachers love their students and know that we are human too, and that we make mistakes and mess up. I feel like this is a really important thing some schools forget.

What should school “do” for you?

I feel like school should prepare us for life outside of academics. It should prepare us for college, but also give us skills for how to deal with life, if we decide not to go to college. I feel like you should be able to take at least one (hopefully more) thing you learned and be able to apply it outside of academics in a positive way. It should also prepare you well for college.

What’s a lesson you learned when you overcame a difficult obstacle?

That a support system of love can really be the thing you need to get through, and it is a lot easier to weather the storm when you have someone.  Also, a small act of kindness can go a long way when someone is having a bad day.

What’s your biggest dream in life?

To find a job I love and surround myself with the people I love.

How do you like spending your free time?

I love to read, play games with my dogs and  spending time with my friends.

Tami knows what it means to take responsibility for her education in order to be successful in class. Despite a busy schedule of activities, Tami always structures her time so she can come in before or after school for extra help.  Tami knows she must take the initiative to ask for assistance in order to understand new concepts, review notes, or go over homework problems she missed.

What activities do you participate in?

In school, I participate in Carroll Football and Basketball Cheer, Carroll Girl Scout Troop, and the Carroll Drama Club.  Outside of school, I participate in Dayton Academy of Gymnastics -  All-Star Cheer.

What's your favorite part of being a student at Carroll?

One of my favorite parts of being a student at Carroll is the House System. I am blessed with an amazing Family Room. Another one of my favorite parts is being able to cheer at the football and basketball games. It’s a great way of getting involved in the Carroll spirit, and it’s a great way to see everyone.

What should school “do” for you?

I believe a school should genuinely care about their students' education. The school should also create a close and caring community amongst the students, faculty, and community.

What’s a lesson you learned when you overcame a difficult obstacle?

I learned that there is no shame in asking for help when you need it. It just shows that you care for your own educational gain, and it can even help you create a closer bond to your teachers. I also learned that not everything and everyone is perfect. Someone sitting right next to you may be struggling just like you, and by taking the time to ask your question, you may have just helped them realize that they’re not alone, and bonds are made.

What’s your biggest dream in life?

My biggest dream is to go to The Cheerleading Worlds competition, and win the whole Worlds competition.

How do you like spending your free time?

I love going to live performing arts shows (plays, musicals, dance exhibitions, etc). I especially LOVE going to watch ballets - my favorites are The Nutcracker and Swan Lake.

What activities do you participate in?

I am an outfielder for the Softball team, have also been part of the cooking club since freshman year, as well as a member of Femme club.

What's your favorite part of being a student at Carroll?

I love the community and how close everyone is. I also love how all the faculty care about the students and will go out of their way to make sure we have a great day.

What should school “do” for you?

School should make you into the best person you can be. It should be the final step to finally becoming a mature adult and an outstanding person.

What’s a lesson you learned when you overcame a difficult obstacle?

Last fall, I took night classes to obtain my State Tested Nursing Assistant license. After a few months, I graduated from the classes and went on to take my state test. Through this experience, I learned that anything is possible with hard work and effort.

What’s your biggest dream in life?

I hope to start my own company sometime in the future. With this company I hope to be financially comfortable enough to adopt at least 3 kids and also start a program to better help the children in the foster care system.

How do you like spending your free time?

I enjoy writing music, and sometimes, I start writing books but never finish. I also enjoy spending time with my friends and volunteering with them.

I learned that things will always get better no matter what happens. I learned to trust in God’s plan because there is always a purpose behind it, even if we don’t see it at the time.

What’s your biggest dream in life?

My biggest dream in life is to make a difference in the world for the better and to have a job that doesn’t feel like work.

How do you like spending your free time?

I love reading, spending time with my family and friends, and baking. I like doing different service projects the most. I enjoy making rosaries, spreading positivity, and passing out food to people in need. It feels amazing to make a difference in the community.

My favorite part of being a student at Carroll is our community environment. Carroll feels like a family to me because everyone is so welcoming. The strong faith community we have here at Carroll is helping me grow as a Catholic.

School should help every student realize their full potential, and be a safe place for every student to learn. It should have supportive teachers and staff.

What’s a lesson you learned when you overcame a difficult obstacle?

A lesson I learned is the importance of thinking outside the box. When you are in a difficult situation, sometimes all you need is a new perspective to find a solution you never would have thought of before.

What’s your biggest dream in life?

My biggest dream in life is to have a successful career after graduating from college.  I would like to travel, experience new cultures, and leave my mark on the world.

How do you like spending your free time?

I like spending my free time with my family and friends, reading and writing stories, watching the Great British Bake Off, and listening to Broadway musicals.

For me, school should be a place to learn how to interact with the world in the years to come.

What’s a lesson you learned when you overcame a difficult obstacle?

Throughout the past month, I have come to understand that trust is a huge component of relationships with people. Trust is the foundation of all relationships. Coming into high school, I was a bit worried that I wouldn’t be able to make friends, but here, I am hanging out with some other freshmen almost every weekend.

What’s your biggest dream in life?

My biggest dream in life is to live my life to the fullest with absolutely no regrets.

How do you like spending your free time?

I enjoy spending my free time hanging out with friends, playing the piano, and practicing basketball in my driveway.

What’s a lesson you learned when you overcame a difficult obstacle?

A difficult obstacle that I had to overcome recently was breaking my wrist.  I had to learn how to adapt to life while only using one hand. Although my wrist will heal, It made me rethink how people with permanent physical disabilities do not have it easy and how our world needs to be more accessible for the disabled.

What’s your biggest dream in life?

My biggest dream in life is to travel the world and find happiness.

How do you like spending your free time?

I enjoy spending my free time playing soccer and hanging out with friends and family.

Sarah Campbell has set the most wonderful example for how a student should be prepared, enthusiastic, and curious as each class begins. Her performance reflects well on her scores in the classroom and makes her an outstanding classmate. I think my seventh period class can rely on Sarah to be a leader in the room for the entire semester. Our class is better because Sarah is in it. Well done Sarah and the Campbell family.

My favorite part of being a student at Carroll is because of the helpful and welcoming environment which pushes you to be the best you can and to your best abilities.

What should school “do” for you?

School should be a place where you learn not only about the required subjects taught there, but it should also be a place of community, fun, laughter, memorable experiences, and people. That is what school is all about.

What’s a lesson you learned when you overcame a difficult obstacle?

Sometimes that when you are going 100 miles an hour, it is okay to slow down and take a look at all you have accomplished instead of thinking about all your mistakes. One mistake will slow you down, but only if you let it.

What’s your biggest dream in life?

I hope to graduate from a college with a degree in veterinary science.

How do you like spending your free time?

I love to spend time with my family and friends. I love to watch sports and love to read.

I participate in Carroll’s musical. I am a part of Carroll’s color guard. I am also on BONDs, which is a high school robotics team.

What's your favorite part of being a student at Carroll?

My favorite part of being a student at Carroll is being a part of the Carroll community. I really feel like I am a part of a big family. Nobody hesitates to welcome anyone who is new to the school. I feel so proud to be a part of such a kind community. It strengthens me to know that we can accomplish anything as a school and as a community.

School should prepare me for my future and help me develop important skills, while guiding and nourishing me spiritually.

What’s a lesson you learned when you overcame a difficult obstacle?

You have to believe in yourself and you can never give up, even in the face of challenges. It is okay to take breaks as long as you keep moving forward. Perseverance will get you through any obstacle.

What’s your biggest dream in life?

My biggest dream in life is to help others and to live for God through every step. I want to make a difference in others’ lives through the way that I treat them. I would also love to find a job that I am passionate about.

I love to read, talk to my closest friends, and go to the lake with my family.

As a freshman, Meghan is already exhibiting strong leadership qualities in the classroom. She is respectful, kind to all of her classmates, and doesn't hesitate to lend a hand. She isn't afraid to laugh at her own mathematical mistakes, which is a good quality to have in life (especially in math class!), but she also accepts the challenge of fixing her errors in order to improve her skills.

I work at Saint Luke Church on weekends and hang out with friends when I can.  I also try to go to the pool a lot and swim

These boys are willing to take care of recycling when no one else will. They never complain, and they often take care of the whole building, instead of just the third floor. Gabe, Dylan, Christian, and Nick have done this with a smile and are even willing to do it while it is snowing and freezing out. They always leave the floors neat and make sure that new bags are in place to make it easier for whoever may do it next (although usually they are the ones that do it the next time as well).

I have learned to adapt, be flexible, and make the most out of a bad situation. Through this, I now appreciate everyday we have together because it can easily be taken away.

My dream in life is to find a career that I love and travel to experience different cultures.

How do you like spending your free time?

In my free time I enjoy hammocking, going to Dunkin´ Donuts, and making and watching TikToks with my friends.

From the first day of Freshman year, Brooke has always been a positive person.  Throughout so many challenges that most of us will never experience, she has risen above them to continue to be a positive person and someone her community can rely on. Brooke gives 110% to anything she does, from academics, to athletics, to being an excellent friend to others. She is using her tragedy to help others in her community by raising money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in honor of her mom and grandmother.

I am part of the Carroll Women’s Varsity Soccer team, Spanish Club, Spanish National Honors Society, Wrestling Stats, and a Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Student of the year candidate.

What is your favorite part of being a student at Carroll?

The supportive community.  After I lost my mom, the supportive Carroll surrounded me with love. 

What should school “do” for you?

School should provide a “home” outside your actual home. You should be able to come to a safe environment that allows you to focus on your studies while still having the experience of meeting new people and creating lifelong friendships.

What’s a lesson you learned when you overcame a difficult obstacle?

Cherish every moment, as it could be your last. Hug your parents every time you say goodbye. Tell your friend how grateful you are for them. Thank your teachers for all the knowledge they have provided you with. Soak in every little part of life because you don’t know when you will have to say goodbye.

What’s your biggest dream in life?

To be a marine biologist in Florida and solve the red tide problem.

How do you like spending your free time?

I like to spend my free time with my friends, my two dogs, and with my father watching Netflix.

Palmer took some friendly words of encouragement and ran with them.  He is excelling in his Honors Geometry class and recently obtained the highest grade in class on his chapter test.  A small change in focus and attitude has made all the difference, and I couldn't be more proud of him for it!

Sarah is amazing all around, but she has been especially great this year. I have her in two classes, and she is always willing to help out wherever she is needed. She jumps in to help the lower level Latin students and volunteers for tutoring even though she has completed all her required hours already. She checks in with me every day at the end of the day to see if she can help me with anything. As an academic team captain, she pretty much runs our practices and keeps everyone on task and organized. I would be lost without Sarah!

John is a math student of mine this year and also part of my Family Room. I have noticed that academically he is excelling greatly!  In years past, he has told me he has struggled with time management.  This year, he is doing a wonderful job in all of his classes, especially maintaining a good grade in his first ever Advanced Placement class.  Also, John is one of kindest students I have ever met. He is a true gentleman, and I am blessed to have him as part of my Family Room.

What is your favorite part of being a student at Carroll?

I really like the environment that Carroll has managed to create. When I was an 8th grade visitor, all I remember was me saying to all of my friends that I think Carroll is the school that I belong in.

What should school “do” for you?

I think the best thing that the school is doing right now is creating an environment that is all about helping others and creating a family within our community.

Stay on task and don’t procrastinate because if you do, your grades will really feel it.

Matt's attitude in class is among the best I've ever encountered. He is a social studies mind, loves learning, and enjoys being challenged. His enthusiasm for the subject matter brings out the best in his peers, as well. My favorite part of being a student at Carroll is seeing how close and connected everyone is. It’s like being a part of a big family.

School should teach us all that we need to know about the world before we become adults. It should prepare us but also be fun.

What’s a lesson you learned when you overcame a difficult obstacle?

It never hurts to be confident and to always stay positive. It’s better to be confident and make friends than to go through high school alone.

My biggest dream in life is to be a better person and help my community.

How do you like spending your free time?

I like to spend my free time reading and practicing the cello and piano.

Pamela has become a pivotal player in the music department, being heavily involved in many ensembles.  Her leadership and work ethic are contagious among her peers, and she never turns down added challenges.  Even operating at less than 100% with an injury, she continues to seek out ways to help others and brighten their day.  She is a major leader by example and a great Patriot!

I learned that even when you face a difficult obstacle, you can always get through it. All your hard work will pay off in the end, even if you can't see it now.

What’s your biggest dream in life?

My biggest dream in life is to make the world a better place.

How do you like spending your free time?

I like spending my free time playing viola and helping out around the house. 

Yoni Mendez '24, Baltimore House with Mrs. Neilsen

Yoni is a freshman in my Spanish III class and also in my Family Room.  He has volunteered for the last two Tuesdays as our Baltimore Spanish tutor for academic days in which he assists students over Google Meet during family time. Also, he has graciously helped our family by picking up lunches from the cafeteria for everyone. Yoni has a wonderful attitude in both class and during family time. Even though this is his first year at Carroll, I feel like he's already made it his home.

Paula is the academic captain for the Baltimore House.  She organized Google Meet tutoring in 7 academic areas for the Baltimore on Tuesday during academic time.  The family room faculty was notified, and she executed her plan beautifully!  I appreciate her time and effort to help our Baltimore students!

What's your favorite art of being a student at Carroll?

My favorite part about Carroll is how supportive all the teachers are.  They go above and beyond with their jobs, treat you like one of their own kids, and are always lending a hand out to anyone.

What should school "do" for you?

School is a place where your education should come first but also a place where you should feel welcomed and embraced by others. 

What’s a lesson you learned when you overcame a difficult obstacle?

I have learned when it comes to overcoming difficult things, that hardships pass.  They don't last forever.  Also, I learned you have to surround yourself with the right people.  It may take some time to figure out who they are, but if you do, they will help you get through the hard things that come. 

What’s your biggest dream in life?

My biggest dream in life is honestly to be happy, being stable and having a family.

How do you like spending your free time?

Being around people I love.  I like spending my free time with mostly my friends.  That could just be hanging out or going out.

So many Carroll students spent time during their Spring Break finding creative, new ways to help others and to celebrate Easter while in quarantine.  Our students are truly one-of-a-kind in serving others, being generous and thoughtful, and finding ways to express their faith and keep the spirit of Easter in their hearts from their homes.  I love our Carroll students and community and consider it a true blessing to minister here.  Some of my students shared their Spring Break activities with me:

Aly always has an amazing, positive attitude in class. She is the first to say hello and always wishes me a good day when she leaves. What's your favorite part of being a student at Carroll?

My favorite part of being a student at Carroll is getting to be surrounded by a community of amazing people who want the best for you. All of the staff cares so much about the students and it makes you feel at home.

What should school “do” for you?

School should be a place where your best self is able to come through. Also, it should equip you with what you need to accomplish any goal you have.

What’s a lesson you learned when you overcame a difficult obstacle?

The biggest lesson I’ve learned when overcoming obstacles is to accept what you cannot change. There is no benefit in letting yourself be upset about something not in your control, as it will only bring you down. You have to continue going further and instead of getting caught up on a problem, work to find the solution

What’s your biggest dream in life?

The biggest goal in my life is to travel the world so I can experience different cultures while meeting new people at the same time.

How do you like spending your free time?

In my free time, I enjoy playing my ukulele and guitar. I also like to spend time with my family by watching our favorite movies together or taking our dog to the park. 

Not only is Grace super polite in class but, this week in Go Guardian chats and Google Meet, she thanked me and told me to have a good day at the end of each class.  I have always liked her positive attitude and friendly smile, but they are especially appreciated now.

I really like being a part of a bigger school and being able to participate in and try so many different sports and clubs. I also like all the different ways the teachers teach.  I really love the teachers.

What should school “do” for you?

It should prepare you for college and expose you to real world situations with people.

What’s a lesson you learned when you overcame a difficult obstacle?

When you go through the difficult thing, you have your friends and family to lean on, but most importantly, you have the Lord to get you through it.

What’s your biggest dream in life?

I don’t really know yet, but what I do know is that I want to always to be surrounded by people that are important to me.

How do you like spending your free time?

I like to spend my free time reading, and I really love to spend time with my friends. I also enjoy playing games with my dogs.

Brittney Sargent is all heart. I am regularly struck by how kind and compassionate she is. She is generous, driven, and dedicated. She sets goals for herself and follows the steps necessary to achieve them.  She has completed almost 600 hours of service and volunteers at Soin Medical Center. Despite how busy her schedule is, she often jumps in to help me when I need an extra hand or volunteers to help others in tutoring and as a leader in LHS and Latin Club.

What's a lesson you learned by overcoming a difficult obstacle?

Being a student at Carroll, I have learned what it takes to stand firm against any obstacle.  I have learned how to become adaptable when confronted with tough situations.  I have learned that to be a great leader, you must first be a follower.

What’s your biggest dream in life?

I hope to go to medical school and become a physician.

How do you like spending your free time?

I enjoy volunteering at Soin Medical Center.  I am also the president of the Clover Patch 4-H Club and work as a 4-H camp counselor.

I've learned that hard work and dedication truly pay off and that everything does not need to be perfect.

My biggest dreams in life are to live in Grenada, Spain, and to one day see the northern lights paint the sky in person.

What’s a lesson you learned when you overcame a difficult obstacle?

Stay strong and persevere!  If you're in a tough situation, just know it will get better.  Also, listen to your parents.  They're always right, even if you don't want to believe it.

What’s your biggest dream in life?

I would love to coach an NFL team or college football team.  I would also love to retire and buy a farm in Wyoming.

What’s a lesson you learned when you overcame a difficult obstacle?

A good lesson I learned after joining band was that things are never as bad as they seem. Even if things are difficult at the time, you still get to reap the rewards later.

What’s your biggest dream in life?

My biggest dream is to be a professional video game player, but if that doesn’t work out, I want to be a physical therapist.

How do you like spending your free time?

I spend my free time playing video games, practicing mellophone, watching movies, hanging out with my friends, and planning activities for my Family Room.

What is your favorite part of being a student at Carroll?

My favorite part is the environment at Carroll.  My classmates and other students are all kind and supportive.  The energy and spirit is out of this world, whether it's sporting events or school competitions.

What Should school “do” for you?

School should help me develop a good work ethic.  It should show me why I should work hard in everything I do.

What’s a lesson you learned when you overcame a difficult obstacle?

I learned to think about how my decisions will affect others.

What’s your biggest dream in life?

I'm not sure what I want to do yet, but I just want a career that will make me happy.

I enjoy listening to music, relaxing outside, and getting sun.  I also like to exercise and lift weights.

Put effort into school work and get your homework done.

I want to be a film director or musician.
