Ohio Academy of Science Honors Carroll with Two STEM Education Awards for 2023-24

September 12, 2024
By Archbishop Carroll High School

Archbishop Carroll High School students and faculty added another year to the school’s tradition as an elite destination for STEM Education in the State of Ohio with two more awards for student performance in the 2023-24 academic year.

Carroll’s streak of winning the Governor’s Thomas Edison Award for Excellence in STEM Education and Research has grown to 24 consecutive years, an accomplishment no other high school in Ohio can match.  To earn this award, schools must hold a local science research day with at least 12 students.  At least two of those students must go on to present research at a District Science Day or have six or more students participate in a District Science Day if no local science day took place.  Students must also participate in a youth science activity outside of the classroom.

The Ohio Academy of Science (OAS) individually recognized Carroll teachers Alexis Barnhart, Amie Bailey, Cody Smith, Diane Keller, Liz Emser, Gretchen Obergefell, Laura Wright, Laurie Fuhr, Mary Ollier, Meghan Mulligan, Mike Lakin, and Todd Tayloe for mentoring students through classroom projects as part of the Edison Award program.

OAS also honored Carroll with the Harold C. Shaw Outstanding School Award for the fourth time in seven years. This prestigious award is based on student participation, attendance, and achievement at Ohio’s State Science Day (SSD).  Schools must have at least four students present research at SSD, and at least 80% of those students must earn the highest rating of Superior for their research.  A student who no-shows or receives a project rating below Excellent at SSD disqualifies a school from consideration for the Shaw Award.  14 of the 17 Carroll students who presented research at SSD earned a Superior rating, and three earned an Excellent rating.
